Genetic Testing for Plavix patients
Approximately $300 billion is wasted each year on drugs that do not work in people who carry certain genes, according to experts. These people never receive the full benefit from these drugs, while others experience dangerous side effects.
A simple buccal swab of the inside of your cheek can evaluate your ability to metabolize or process drugs. As a drug gets metabolized, it is broken down into harmless pieces and eventually cleared. This is all based off of your genetic code. Harmonyx can help assure that your doctor's prescription is safe and effective by providing information that can help determine the best dosage and prescription for your unique genetic makeup. Each person's genetic makeup is unique. A small number of proteins in your body metabolize and are targets for any particular medication. By identifying variations of the genes for these proteins, Harmonyx Diagnostics can help predict how your body will react to a given prescribed medication.
This service is free for Medicare Part D patients and may be partially covered by other insurance plans. If you are taking or considering taking Plavix (clopidogrel), contact us to schedule your test. We at Wake Forest Drug have already identified several patients with this test that cannot metabolize Plavix. If your test shows that you should not be on Plavix, we will contact your doctor and request you be changed to a medication you will be able to metabolize.
